Endorsements and Ethics
Medicine is a noble profession as Brutus is a nobleman.
Going to a doctor is still a matter of trust, in rural and semi-rural India. A physician’s endorsement is a guaranteed acceptance from the middle and lower middle classes. Which constitute the larger India.
Companies seek such endorsements on their labels to gain the customers trust. But these endorsements are on payment. The IMA (Indian Medical Association) does not test the claim of these companies make, but decides on the basis of the data provided by the company. The veto power is with the MCI (medical council of India) which does not enforce this authority since most of the MCI members are also the IMA members.
The Tropicana endorsement gave the IMA 1 cr. Remuneration, while dabur gave 67 lakhs. When Tropicana was endorsed a section of the medical profession accused IMA for crossing ethical boundaries for drinking canned juice was not as good as drinking fresh juice. But IMA proposes to raise 1.94 crores, what it calls a health awareness programs through these endorsements.
DR.Babu from IMA Payannur has filed an RTI application with the MCI asking what action has it taken against IMA. MCI claims that taking action is not within its jurisdiction. While the IMC act enables it to take disciplinary action on violation of ethics.—(incidentally doctors advertising is also unethical)
The Issue is being circumvented using terms like public private health initiative program. Or Himalayas inspired by Ayurveda and, based on Ayurveda

2008 November MOU signed.
2009 June Dr.K.V.Babu files RTI with MCI
2009 July 1st MCI claims it has no jurisdiction to take action
2009 July 23rd Dr.Babu files a RTI with health ministry.
2009 aug.6th health ministry directs him to MCI.
These are not the only products, bournvita, horlicks and complan are milk substitutes and not additives.
Soya increases estrogen level which means early menarche
