How do I become a medical writer?

I have 12 years experience as an allied health professional in the UK and Australia. I am currently working as a fitness professional in the US. I wish to become a medical writer. What is the best way to do this? Do I need to take a technical or medical writing course? How can I get work if I have no experience as a writer?
