James M Howard MD Bio
James M Howard, M.D. holds a unique combination of skills that he has derived from his experiences in information technology, teaching and the practice of emergency medicine.
On the path toward medical school, James received majors in both chemistry and biology from Southern Methodist University with a final GPA of 3.5 over the 5 year period. The latter years are notable for his receiving the Harold Jeskey Scholarship twice as well as teaching along side Dr. Jeskey, the dean of the chemistry department. He proceeded to gain his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio, followed by a residency at the Ohio State University Hospitals and Children’s Hospital in Columbus Ohio. Once back in Texas, James began a career practicing primary care medicine for all ages, transitioning to dedicated emergency room practice over the next few years. Specializing in short notice, high-risk coverage in hospitals throughout Texas, situations required immediate familiarization with personnel, the medical and technological capabilities. Immediate, urgent patient care was not unusual upon arriving at these never before seen locations.
In 1998, after recovering from a 30% total body surface area burn injury, James transitioned into the booming IT market, quickly attaining four certifications including Microsoft and Cisco. At Mednet Connect, Inc. he taught himself the VBA language and not only wrote the needed software, but wrote an entire re-pricing engine that the company used later on to get more business.
Once the “Dot.com” failures ravaged the IT industry, James found joy in teaching, utilizing his medical knowledge and experience to stimulate and inspire his students. He rewrote the pharmacology course at Dallas Nursing Institute, elevating student’s comprehension and improving their exit (HESI) scores. He also developed a computer automated test grading system – written in Excel VBA, as the school up to that time still manually graded all examinations.
James is a dynamic, flexible get-it-done individual. He is a communicator. He enjoys tackling new issues, learning new technologies and implementing better solutions. He can bring many valuable assets to any organization.
