I am a Brit currently living in France, where I work as a medical writer for a Parisian biopharmaceutical company. As is true for many other medical writers, this was not exactly a premeditated career path. Prior to medical writing I had a varied research career in the UK, Canada and France, specialising in biomedical infrared spectroscopy and later nanobiotechnology. These experiences helped furnish me with the broad range of transferable skills pertinent to medical/scientific writing, although it wasn’t until reaching France that I realised it was the transfer and communication of knowledge that really made me tick. It had not escaped my attention that I tended to gravitate towards this aspect of my research whenever possible, but these suspicions were confirmed when I was frequently called upon to edit or co-author the work of my non Anglophone colleagues. When the time came to make the change it was without any doubts that this was the right fit for me and thankfully everything has gone smoothly so far. I am now looking forward to a long, and hopefully prosperous, career in medical/scientific communications.
I am particularly interested to hear from anyone with medical writing experience/connections in Ottawa, Canada. I lived in Canada for almost 5 years and would very much like to find an employment opportunity that would allow me to return.
