Online MW training?!

Hello everybody,

I have been hunting for training courses in medical writing since the past week. Fortunately I encountered a few clinical research training institutes offering them. Some online courses such as that by University of Philadelphia listed in MWN.

I was interested in knowing about the credibility and value of these courses and especially the online options. and if possible get to know some good training institutes in India for MW.

Here's one that I found on the Net. Concordia University is offering an online course on medical writing. But it starts in 2009.

Dear Everyone,

Has anyone come across the Medbio Publications Medical Writing Institute? It offers online certificate courses in medical writing based on the AMA style guide. The fee is $4500 USD for the whole certificate and it takes one year. Tuition is online.

I just wondered if anyone had any experience of this online certificate course in medical writing.

I think you mean the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. They have an online biomedical writing program. Tufts and Boston University offer an online Master of Science in Health Communication.

Check out San Francisco writers. They sponsor two conferences: one for general writing this coming Feb and then in the summer they offer a conference on "Writing for Change" for us nonfiction folks. I attended the latter this past summer and was delighted about how accessible the faculty was as well as conference leaders, agents Michael Larsen and Elizabeth Pomada--both delightful.

In addition, we have an upcoming conference that will be of major interest to physician non-fiction writers. The conference is aimed at speakers but applies to clinical folks as well. Medical Journal of Therapeutics Africa offers online training courses in medical writing. I was Director of Biomedical Writing Master of Science Program for 4 years, and I set up the courses. The choice is to spend over $40K and earn a masters, or to pay MJoTA $1000 and access unlimited numbers of webinars, have one-to-one training on what you need, and one-to-one help on writing assignments. When I take on a student I require the student to work with me on his or her CV, prepare at least 3 papers for publication in MJoTA. http://www.mjota.org

The University of Chicago has a Medical Writing and Editing Certificate program that has been around for some time https://grahamschool.uchicago.edu/php/medicalwritingandediting/

In a slightly different vein, you may want to look at the writing course curriculum available through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Open Courseware.. MIT makes available on line, at no charge, all of its course materials. For those interested in learning new ideas and concepts and pretty good at self-study, this approach is a great way to go.
